Will my car insurance go up even if I attend traffic school?
Citations Kept Off Record
Your car insurance usually will not go up if you attend traffic school. In fact, the purpose of traffic school is to keep citations off your driving record so that your insurance company doesn’t find out about them. When you receive a citation for a standard moving violation, usually what happens is you pay the citation and it ends up on your driving record in about 30-60 days. Once the citation gets reported to your insurance company, you can expect your insurance premium to rise the next time you renew your insurance.
Eligibility
Most states, however, will allow you to attend traffic school once every year or two in order to clear a citation from your driving record. Keep in mind that more serious offenses, like DUI, are not eligible for traffic school. If you are eligible to attend traffic school, the DMV will notify you and give you instructions how to enroll. If you successfully complete traffic school and pass your final test, the traffic school will submit your proof of completion to the DMV and the DMV will expunge the citation from your driving record. The citation will never have appeared on your record, which means your insurance company never got the word in the first place.
You won’t have to worry about your car insurance going up because of the citation, although it might go up for some other reason.
