How do I apply for a DC drivers license if I am 18 or older? Washington DC

New Driver Checklist

District of Columbia Driver License Requirements

Before you can take a driving test for your DC drivers license, you must first obtain a learners permit.

And, before applying for that, you'll need to prepare for the 20-question knowledge test by studying the DMV's drivers manual, your prime study source. All test questions are based on material found in the manual, including road sign identification, space management, and road emergencies. You can obtain a hardcopy from any DMV office or, if you prefer, by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the entire manual, you'll next want to take at least one practice test. These online exams mirror the actual permit test in style and content, allowing you to assess if you're test-ready.

Apply for Washington DC Permit

Visit your local DMV service center with:

  • Proof of name and date of birth.
  • Proof of Washington DC residency.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • A completed DC Driver License or Identification Card Application. This can be downloaded from the DMV website.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard) to pay all required fees.
In addition to the knowledge test, you'll also need to pass a vision test. Pass both and you'll receive a permit, valid for one year. If you're younger than 21 you must hold the permit for at least six months before taking the driving test; if you're 21 or older, you'll become immediately eligible to apply for a drivers license.

Take the Washington DC License Test

You must make driving test appointment. You can arrange this online, via the DMV website, or by calling (202) 727-5000.

On the day of your scheduled license test, arrive at the test site with:

  • Your learners permit.
  • A vehicle that's legally registered, insured, and in good working condition.
  • A licensed driver 21 years or older.
If you pass, the DMV will immediately process your driver license.
