Driver License Requirements for Washington DC Teens
To obtain a drivers license as a teen driver, you must follow the steps of the Gradual Rearing of Adult Drivers (GRAD) program. You can begin step one with a learners permit, provided you're at least 16 years old.Apply for a District of Columbia Learners Permit
Before applying, you'll need to prepare for the 20-question knowledge license test. All questions are based on information contained in the drivers manual, making it your prime study source. You can grab a copy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV's website.After studying, you'll next want to take at least one permit practice test. These exams flourish online, allowing you to take as many as needed until you feel test-confident.
When you're reading to apply, visit your local DMV office with:
- Proof of name and date of birth.
- Proof of Washington DC residency.
- Proof of your Social Security number.
- Proof of parental approval.
- A completed DC Driver License or Identification Card Application. This can be downloaded from the DMV website.
- Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa, Discover) to pay all required fees.
NOTE: Drivers education or any type of driver training course is not mandatory. You're welcome to take a drivers ed class on your own, but it will have no bearing on permit or license requirements.
Apply for a Provisional Drivers License
Before you can apply, you must meet the following requirements:- Have held your learners permit for at least six months with no pointable violations.
- Clear all outstanding debts to the District of Columbia.
- Complete at least 40 hours of supervised driving with a licensed driver who is at least 21 years old. This must be documented on a Certification of Eligibility for Provisional License form. In addition, a photocopy of the supervising driver(s) license must be included.
When you arrive at the test site, have:
- Your learners permit.
- A completed Certification of Eligibility for Provisional License form.
- A vehicle that's legally registered and insured.
- Another licensed driver.
