  • A completed DC Driver License or Identification Card Application.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, Discover, MasterCard) to pay all required fees.
In addition, you must, if applicable, clear any outstanding debts to the District of Columbia and any unpaid fines in other jurisdictions.

Required Driver License Tests

You'll first need to pass a vision screening and a 20-question knowledge test. To prepare for the knowledge test, study the state's drivers manual. You can obtain a hardcopy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the entire manual, you'll next want to take at least one online practice test.

After passing both exams you'll receive a permit, allowing you to take a driving test. You must make an appointment. You can do this online, via the DMV website, or by calling (202) 727-5000.

When you arrive for the license test, have with you:

  • Your learners permit, if applicable.
  • A working vehicle that's legally registered and insured.
  • Another licensed driver, if applicable.
