Do I need auto insurance to apply for a DC drivers license? Washington DC

New Driver Checklist

District of Columbia Car Insurance

When you arrive to test for your drivers license, you will need to provide an insured vehicle. Otherwise, you do not have to provide proof of auto insurance when applying for a driver license.

The only other time proof is required (aside from when law enforcement asks for it) is during vehicle registration.

Washington DC Auto Insurance Requirements

To comply with DC's Compulsory/No Fault Motor Vehicle Insurance Act, you must continuously carry, at the very minimum, the following amounts of coverage:

  • $10,000 of property damage liability.
  • $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident (third party liability).
  • $25,000 per person, $50,000 per accident (uninsured motorist bodily injury).
  • $5,000 subject to $200 deductible (uninsured motorist property damage).
If you allow your car insurance to lapse, the DMV will suspend your registration tags and reciprocity sticker. In addition, you will be hit with a $150 fine, and an additional $7 per day once your insurance lapse exceeds 30 days.
