Do I have to take drivers ed or driver training to get a Washington DC driver license? Washington DC

New Driver Checklist

District of Columbia Driver Training Requirements

Drivers education is not required in Washington DC. This applies to all applicants of all ages. You are welcome and even encouraged to enroll in a drivers ed class, but it will have no bearing on your driver license application.

Washington DC Drivers License Requirements

To apply for a drivers license, you must visit your local DMV office and provide:

  • Proof of identity and date of birth.
  • Proof of your Social Security number.
  • Proof of Washington DC residency.
  • A completed DC Driver License or Identification Card Application. This can be downloaded from the DMV website.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, Discover) to pay all required fees.
In addition, you must all pass a vision screening, a knowledge test, and a driving test.

To prep for the 20-question knowledge test, you'll need to study the DMV drivers manual. You can obtain a hardcopy from any DMV office, or by downloading from the DMV website.

After studying the entire manual, you'll want to take a practice test. These can be found online and feature similar questions to those on the actual exam, allowing you to accurately gauge if you're test-prepared.

To take the license test, you'll need to make an appointment. You can do this online via the DMV website, or by calling (202) 727-5000.
