District of Columbia Driving Test Requirements

An appointment is needed for a license test. You can arrange for a test date online via the DMV website, or by calling (202) 727-5000.

If a scheduling conflict arises, you must give the DMV at least two days notice. Otherwise, the DMV will saddle you with a $10 cancellation fee. Cancel by calling (202) 727-5000.

Before testing for your drivers license, be sure to get as much driving experience as possible. Practice in all driving situations, including turning at light-controlled intersections and driving in reverse. You should also take an online practice test or two to polish your understanding of the DC road rules.

On the day of your scheduled driving test:

  • Arrive at least 10 minutes early.
  • Have your Washington DC permit, if applicable.
  • Have a vehicle that is legally registered and insured.
  • Be accompanied by another licensed driver 21 or older, if applicable.
  • Provide a Completed Certificate of Eligibility for a Provisional License form, if you’re younger than 21.
The vehicle you provide for the driver license test must meet the following requirements:

  • Have a hand emergency brake located between the seats.
  • Have a valid inspection sticker (if required in the state from which the vehicle is registered).
  • Have working brake lights, signal lights, horn, and driver's side window.
  • Have a windshield free of cracks.
  • Have two rear view windows.
If you pass the test you'll be issued a drivers license before you leave the exam site.
