Do I need to make an appointment to apply for a WA driver license? Washington

Appointment for the WA Driving Test

You must make a license test appointment with the driver licensing office in your area. You can do this by directly calling; if necessary, you can find the phone number for the driver licensing office in your area on the DOL website.

Before arriving for the driver license test, be sure to get as much driving time as possible. Practice all driving situations, including parking, turning at light-controlled intersections, and backing up. It's also a good idea to take a practice test or two to brush up on your knowledge.

Arrive for Washington Driving Test

When you arrive for your scheduled license test, be sure to have with you:

  • A vehicle in working condition.
  • Proof of auto insurance.
  • Another licensed driver, if applicable.
If you pass, the DOL will issue you a temporary drivers license. Use this for driving until your permanent drivers license arrives in the mail in about 10 days.
