Smog and Emissions Inspections in Alabama

Alabama law does not require emissions testing or smog checks as a condition of vehicle registration.

However, Jefferson and Shelby county residents can opt for a voluntary emissions and smog check conducted by Alabama Partners for Clean Air.

Vehicles must be driven for at least 10 minutes prior to the inspection in order to obtain an accurate reading. Acceptable readings are as follows:

  • Carbon Dioxide (CO2): 13 – 16%
  • Carbon Monoxide (CO): Less than 0.5%
  • Hydrocarbons (HC): Less than 100 ppm
  • Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): less than 100 ppm
  • Oxygen (O2): 0.3 – 1.5%
If your vehicle fails the inspection, a representative will help you make arrangements for the needed repairs. The Alabama Partners for Clean Air Program will pay 80% of the cost of oxygen sensors, catalytic converters, other recommended repairs, up to a maximum of $500.

Unfortunately, the program does not cover:

  • Replacement of vehicle mufflers.
  • Vehicles older than 10 years old.
  • Vehicles that are still under manufacturer warranty.
These inspections are provided free of charge to interested drivers and can be conducted throughout the year, not just during your assigned register car renewal period. Visit the Alabama Partners for Clean Air website for a calendar showing inspection times and locations.

Do not contact your local AL Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office or the Department of Public Safety (DPS) as neither is involved with the testing. The MVD can, however, help you with any other car registration concerns.
