What are the AL emissions or smog check requirements for vehicle registration? Alabama
Smog and Emissions Inspections in Alabama
Alabama law does not require emissions testing or smog checks as a condition of vehicle registration. However, Jefferson and Shelby county residents can opt for a voluntary emissions and smog check conducted by Alabama Partners for Clean Air.
Vehicles must be driven for at least 10 minutes prior to the inspection in order to obtain an accurate reading. Acceptable readings are as follows:
- Carbon Dioxide (CO2): 13 – 16%
- Carbon Monoxide (CO): Less than 0.5%
- Hydrocarbons (HC): Less than 100 ppm
- Nitrogen Oxides (NOx): less than 100 ppm
- Oxygen (O2): 0.3 – 1.5%
Unfortunately, the program does not cover:
- Replacement of vehicle mufflers.
- Vehicles older than 10 years old.
- Vehicles that are still under manufacturer warranty.
Do not contact your local AL Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) office or the Department of Public Safety (DPS) as neither is involved with the testing. The MVD can, however, help you with any other car registration concerns.
