Replace Lost, Stolen, or Damaged AL Car Registration

Once you receive your Alabama vehicle registration receipt, you should keep it in your vehicle at all times. There is a $50 fine if you are unable to provide evidence of current car registration when requested by a law enforcement officer.

The Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), rather than the Department of Public Safety (DPS) handles registration matters. So, if your registration papers have been lost, damaged, or stolen, you will need to visit your county's tag and title office with a current photo ID to request a replacement. There is no registration fee for this service.

However, if you have reason to believe your registration papers have been stolen, you should first file a police report. The AL MVD representative will ask to see a copy of this document when you request your replacement register car registration receipt.

For government vehicles or vehicles with volunteer fire department license plates, you may complete Form MV 40-12-250A Application for Replacement License Plates and Registration Receipts on the Alabama Motor Vehicle Division (MVD) website to request a replacement registration receipt. There is no charge for a duplicate vehicle registration receipt, but there is a $26.19 fee if you need to request a replacement license plate.
