How to Replace Your Lost License Plates, Stickers, Tabs, or Tags

License plates, stickers, tabs, and car tags will need to be replaced as soon as possible if they are lost or damaged. Fortunately, the Alabama Motor Vehicle Division (AL MVD) makes this process very easy. (Visit the MVD, which handles car registration and title transactions, rather than the DPS, which handles driver license services.)

Simply visit your county's tag and title office to complete a short application. No appointment is needed, but there is a $2 fee for your replacement plates, stickers, or car tags.

If your license plates were stolen, remember that your first step should be to file a police report. You must bring a copy of the report with you when you apply for your replacement tags.

Additional License Plate Information

Remember that license plates should be removed when your vehicle is sold. If you purchase a replacement vehicle, you may be able to transfer your plates to the new car or truck when you complete your vehicle registration.

If you move outside the state of Alabama, you are not required to return your license plates. This is because Alabama does not give refunds for the unused portion of car registration fees.
