How do I order personalized plates and vanity plates in Alabama? Alabama

Personalized plates and vanity plates can be a good way to express your sense of style. Alabama, like most other states, offers a number of options for drivers who are looking for memorable license plates.

According to the AL Motor Vehicle Division (MVD), personalized plates and vanity plates can be displayed on automobiles and pickup trucks with a gross vehicle weight not to exceed 12,000 lbs.

Ordering Personalized Plates and Vanity Plates

If you are interested in ordering personalized plates and vanity plates for your vehicle, you can search the MVD website (not the DPS – that office handles your license plates) or visit your county license plate issuing official's office to see if the letter and number combination you want is available. Please keep in mind that offensive combinations will not be allowed.

If you want to reserve a license plate combination online, there is a $2 fee. You have five days after making the reservation to visit the Alabama county license plate office to officially place your order and pay the remainder of the license plate fees. If you fail to do this, your license plate combination is released and becomes available to the public once again.

In addition to having a personalized message on your license plate, you can choose a design to reflect a special interest or your support of a particular cause. When choosing custom license plate designs, please keep in mind that not all license plate options are available to the general public. Some plates are only available to members of specific organizations or people who meet certain eligibility criteria. For example, military plates can only be purchased by qualified veterans.

The fee for a personalized plate or vanity plates varies depending upon the design you select, but generally ranges from $3 to $50.  When you visit the county license plate office, remember that fees for specialty plates are in addition to all standard vehicle registration charges.

After paying the fees, you'll be issued a registration receipt, a 60-day temporary license plate, and decals to be placed on the new custom plate. Your custom license plate will be shipped to your home address directly from the manufacturing facility. In most cases, this process takes four to six weeks.
