AK Car Registration Procedures

In the state of Alaska, DMV registration must be completed within 30 days of purchasing a new vehicle, or within 10 days of relocating to the state.

If you have purchased your vehicle from a dealership, the dealership will register the car for you.

If you have obtained a vehicle in any other way, such as through purchase from a private party, or inheritance from a family member, you must present the following to your local DMV office:

  • The car title, indicating you as the new owner.
  • Current out-of-state registration, if applicable.
  • Completed Application for Title and Registration.
  • Emissions inspection (I/M) certificate, if applicable (see below).
  • Required registration fees, as published on the DMV website (see below).

Register Car Fees

The fees for vehicle registration depend on the car’s make, model, weight, and age. Registration for non-commercial vehicles ranges from $30 to $160. Some communities charge an additional Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT).

Contact your local DMV directly, for help in deciphering all applicable fees.

Emissions Testing Requirements

If you live in the Anchorage or Fairbanks areas, your vehicle may be subject to a smog check. Vehicles exempt from a smog check include:

  • New vehicles, for the first four years.
  • 2006 model vehicles or newer, for the first six years.
  • Vehicles weighing more than 12,000 pounds.
  • Motorcycles.
  • Motor scooters.
  • Trailers.
  • Snow vehicles.
Contact your local DMV ahead of time, if you are unsure of smog inspection requirements for your vehicle.

Vehicle Insurance Requirements

All drivers are required to carry proof of vehicle registration and vehicle insurance at all times, when operating a motor vehicle. You can obtain an insurance quote online via numerous insurance providers.
