AK Car Registration Procedures
In the state of Alaska, DMV registration must be completed within 30 days of purchasing a new vehicle, or within 10 days of relocating to the state.If you have purchased your vehicle from a dealership, the dealership will register the car for you.
If you have obtained a vehicle in any other way, such as through purchase from a private party, or inheritance from a family member, you must present the following to your local DMV office:
- The car title, indicating you as the new owner.
- Current out-of-state registration, if applicable.
- Completed Application for Title and Registration.
- Emissions inspection (I/M) certificate, if applicable (see below).
- Required registration fees, as published on the DMV website (see below).
Register Car Fees
The fees for vehicle registration depend on the car’s make, model, weight, and age. Registration for non-commercial vehicles ranges from $30 to $160. Some communities charge an additional Motor Vehicle Registration Tax (MVRT).

Emissions Testing Requirements
If you live in the Anchorage or Fairbanks areas, your vehicle may be subject to a smog check. Vehicles exempt from a smog check include:

- Vehicles weighing more than 12,000 pounds.
- Motorcycles.
- Motor scooters.
- Trailers.
- Snow vehicles.
Vehicle Insurance Requirements
