AK Car Registration Inspection Requirements
The state of Alaska requires you to renew your DMV registration every two years.In order to renew your car registration in the Anchorage and Fairbanks areas, an emissions inspection is required for some vehicles. The purpose of emissions testing is to determine the amount of smog your vehicle produces.
Vehicles exempt from a smog check include:
- New vehicles, for the first four years.
- 2006 Model vehicles or newer, for the first six years.
- Vehicles exceeding 12,000 pounds, such as trailers and snow vehicles.
- Motorcycles and motor scooters.

Register Car Procedures
After you have passed the emissions inspection, you can complete your vehicle registration by submitting your inspection certificate to your local DMV office, or to one of the several “One Stop” locations offering renewal processing.Additional required documents include:
- A completed Vehicle Transaction Application.
- A copy of your expiring registration certificate.
- Your registration renewal notice.
- A personal check or money order for the fee amount listed on your renewal notice.
