Emissions Testing Requirements for AK Car Registration
Alaska DMV registration must be renewed every two years. If you live or work in one of the following metropolitan areas, an emissions and smog check may be required for vehicle registration:- Fort Richardson
- Elmendorf Air Force Base
- Girdwood
- Eagle River
- Indian
- Chugiak
- Eklutna
- Fort Wainwright
- Eielson Air Force Base
- Salcha
- North Pole
- Vehicles weighing 12,000 pounds or more.
- Snow vehicles.
- Trailers.
- Motorcycles and motor scooters.
- New cars, for the first four years.
- 2006 vehicle models or newer, for the first six years.
Emissions Testing Locations
The DMV website provides a complete list of testing locations, to include several “One Stop” register car locations. When testing at a One Stop location, bring the following required documents to complete your registration renewal:
- A copy of your expiring registration certificate.
- Your registration renewal notice, which you should receive in the mail 30 days prior to your vehicle’s expiration date.
- A completed Vehicle Transaction Application.
- A personal check or money order, payable to the AK DMV.
