In the state of Alaska, you are required to display two license plates--one in the front of the vehicle, and one in the back--including a current month and year tab on the back license plate only. You can order personalized plates on the DMV website, provided:

  • Your vehicle registration is current, and not due to expire any time soon.
  • You do not intend to sell the vehicle in the near future.
  • The vehicle is in your name.

When ordering your specialty plates online, you must pay with a Visa or MasterCard credit card.  If you would prefer to pay with a personal check or money order, you must complete and mail a Personalized Plate Application to the AK DMV:

State of Alaska

Division of Motor Vehicles

1300 W. Benson Blvd., Suite 200

Anchorage, AK 99503-3600

(907) 269-5551

Custom plate applications are available for download on the DMV website.

Legal Requirements for Vanity Plates

Your personalized plate must have a minimum of two characters, and a maximum of six. A space between characters counts as one character choice; dashes and slashes are not accepted. Acceptable characters include A-Z of the English alphabet, and numbers 0-9. When requesting the number zero, place a slash through the zero, in order to distinguish it from the letter O.

Turn Around Time

Your custom plates will be mailed to you within 12 weeks, to your current mailing address. If you move, please notify the DMV immediately of your address change.
