Register Your Vehicle for the First Time in Arizona

As an Arizona (AZ) resident you should contact the Motor Vehicles Division (MVD) to complete your car registration. Whether you are a long-time resident or newly relocated to AZ, you must register your automobile.

Motor Vehicle Inspections

Should you reside in Phoenix or Tucson and your motor vehicle was made earlier than 1968, complete an emissions compliance form as part of the register car process. Complete the smog check and vehicle inspection 90 days prior to registering the vehicle with the MVD.

A list of vehicle inspection and emissions testing centers is located at the AZ Department of Environmental Quality website. You can also dial (877) 692-9227 to inquire about smog testing center locations and hours of operation.

Forms Required at the MVD

When you visit the MVD, provide the clerk with a copy of the vehicle emission test results. Your motor vehicle must pass emission testing before MVD will register it.  Other items that you will provide the MVD include:

Vehicle title (if you own the motor vehicle; if you do not own the vehicle, provide the MVD with the name and contact information of the lienholder).
License plates (out-of-state license plates must be surrendered to MVD at the time of registration).
Proof of liability auto insurance.

Vehicle Registration Fees

Pay the vehicle registration fee at the MVD office. Standard registration fees are as follows:

  • Standard automobile: $8
  • Air quality research fee: $1.50 (must be paid with all registrations)
  • Noncommercial motor trailer: $125 (vehicle must not weigh more than 10,000 pounds)
  • Commercial motor trailer: $800 (for vehicles that weigh more than 10,000 pounds)
Use your credit card, a check, or a money order to pay the registration fee. Be advised that returned check fees are $25.
