What are the AZ emissions or smog check requirements for vehicle registration? Arizona

Arizona Smog and Emissions Inspections for Vehicle Registration

Motor vehicles that operate in Arizona (AZ) must meet smog and emissions testing requirements. The AZ MVD will not register your vehicle until it passes these register car inspections.

The emissions test is performed within 90 days of completing your vehicle registration. You cannot have the test performed more than 90 days before you register your automobile.

Vehicle Inspection Advice

Remove attached trailers from your motor vehicle prior to the smog check. Other smog and emissions test requirements include:

  • Vehicle cannot overheat during the inspection.
  • Passengers and animals are not allowed in the vehicle during the inspection.
  • Check engine lights must not be on.
  • Motor vehicles must enter the testing station on their own (they cannot be pushed or towed).
To keep your vehicle from overheating, turn the engine off while you wait for your vehicle to be inspected. Inspectors will check to see that your vehicle’s emission control devices (i.e. crankcase, thermostatic air cleaner) are operating properly.

Other areas tested during the inspection are:

  • Air injection systems
  • Oxygen sensor
  • Fuel tank
  • Exhaust gas recirculation system
Visit an inspection station that is located in the same area that you live or commute in. A list of MVD inspection stations is located on the AZ Department of Environmental Quality website. Wait times at the stations are also listed at the website.

Inspection Fees

Smog and emissions inspection fees vary by location.  Current fees at the Phoenix inspection station are as follows:

  • Cars made in 1981 or later: $27.75 (This fee also applies to trucks that weigh fewer than 8,501 pounds.)
  • Other motor vehicles: $19
  • Diesel vehicles: $28 (The vehicle must weigh more than 8,500 pounds.)
It cost $12.25 to pay to have all vehicles inspected at the Tucson station. Bring a copy of the smog and emissions test results to a MVD office so that you can finalize your car registration.
