Colorado Emissions Testing Requirements to Register Car

Proof of passing a smog check is required for DMV registration, but only if you reside in one of the following counties: Boulder, Broomfield, Denver, Douglas, Jefferson, and certain parts of Adams and Arapahoe.

NOTE: New vehicles do not require emissions testing until the fourth model year. If, for example, you purchase a 2010 model year car, it will not require a smog inspection until 2014.

Where and How to Get a CO Smog Inspection

Tests are administered by Air Care Colorado on a first-come-first-serve basis. To avoid lines, test early morning Saturdays, or during the two middle weeks of the month. You will need cash or a check to pay the $25 inspection fee ($15 if your vehicle was manufactured prior to 1982).

Other CO Car Registration Requirements

To obtain vehicle registration, visit your local DMC office with:

  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Verifiable proof of identity.
  • Proof of passing an emissions test, if applicable.
  • Cash or a check to pay all required fees and taxes. Registration fees are based on a vehicle's weight and make. For help in determining your exact fee, contact your local county clerk.
Keep in mind that if your car is new, you will need to apply for vehicle registration within 60 days. And, if you're new to Colorado, you will have 90 days after establishing residency to register your vehicle with the CO DMV.
