Replace a Regular Lost Title

If you're in the midst of a title transfer and can't locate the car title, you will need to apply for a duplicate by:

  1. Completing an appropriately named Application for Duplicate Certificate of Title (Form H-6B). This MUST be signed and notarized.
  2. Writing a check for $25.
  3. Completing a lien release, if applicable.
  4. Mailing the application and payment to:
Department of Motor Vehicles
Title Division
60 State St.
Wethersfield, CT 06161

You should receive the duplicate title in the mail in about 15 days.

Upon receiving, you'll then need to sign over the car title, provide a bill of sale, and remove the vehicle's license plates. This will complete the title transfer and allow the buyer to register the vehicle under his or her name.

Replace an Automated Lost Title

If the missing title is automated, you can apply for an immediate duplicate title at any full-service Connecticut DMV office, at the Willimantic satellite office, or at the Middletown photo license center. The DMV will not give titles to anyone but the owners or lienholders on record, necessitating proper identification.
