Connecticut License Plates, Vanity Plates, and Specialty Plates

To order vanity plates (also known as personalized plates), your vehicle must be permanently registered in CT. You cannot order a custom license plate if your vehicle is registered out-of-state or if you own a temporary registration.

Before applying, you'll need to settle on a combination of letters and or numbers (maximum of six). The DMV will not accept any combination deemed offensive.

To apply, complete and submit a Special Order Plate Application (Form M-22) along with payment for the personalized plate fee (make check payable to "DMV").

CT Custom Plate Fees

  • Vanity plate with special plate background (Long Island Sound, Keep Kids Safe, Greenways, United We Stand, Cure Kids Cancer, Conserve Wildlife-Eagle, Conserve Wildlife-Bobcat, Animal Population Control Background, Amistad, Police Memorial, Olympic Spirit): $135
  • Vanity plate with Celebrate Nursing or Support Our Troops background: $145
  • Vanity plate with standard background: $90
  • Vanity plate with early American background: $92
You can drop off the license plate application and fee at any DMV office, or mail to:
