Register Car in DE

In Delaware you must title your vehicle before applying for car registration. Though not required, most applicants save time by applying for both while at the DMV.

To apply for a Delaware DMV registration certificate, visit your local DMV office and present:

  • Proof of passing an emissions and safety inspection.
  • A completed title/registration application.
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Proof of identification.
  • A signed-over car title. Or, if applicable, an out-of-state title if the vehicle was registered outside of Delaware.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard) to pay the $40 vehicle registration fee.

Delaware Car Registration after Relocating

After moving to Delaware and establishing residency, you have 60 days to apply for a DE vehicle registration. Follow the steps described above.

DE Smog and Emissions Testing

Before titling/registering, you must take your vehicle to one of the four DMV inspection facilities. Inspections, which are free, check for safety and smog emissions.

A smog check is not required if your vehicle is less than five model years old. It will, however, still need to be inspected for vehicle identification number verification.
