Obtaining a Duplicate Car Registration

If your Delaware car registration certificate is lost, stolen, or destroyed, you'll need to replace it as quickly as possible. Otherwise, if stopped, you could possibly be ticketed even though the DMV has your vehicle registration on record.

To replace, visit your local DMV office and provide

  • Proof of valid car insurance.
  • Your DMV license plate number.
  • Cash or a check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard) to pay the $2 vehicle registration replacement fee.

Register Car in DE

If you're new to the state, or recently purchased a new car, you will need to have it titled and registered. The process is relatively simple.

First, you'll need to pass a safety inspection and emissions test (new cars that are fewer than five model years old are exempt) at one of four DMV test sites. After passing, present the DMV with:

  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • An odometer reading, if applicable.
  • Proof of passing inspection.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa) to pay $40 DMV registration fee.
