How to Obtain a Duplicate Title in Delaware

If your title goes missing you will need to replace it. You may not need it now, or next year, but you will eventually need it when it comes time for a title transfer. This applies to all change-of-owner scenarios, including trade-ins and charity car donations.

To replace a lost title, visit your local DMV and:

  1. Provide a completed Application for Duplicate Title (Form MV213). Be sure to include your license plate number and the plate's expiration date.
  2. All owners listed on the car title must sign MV213 and provide drivers license numbers. If you so choose, your signature can be signed by a Power of Attorney. An original notarized Power of Attorney must accompany the duplicate title application.
  3. If a lien exists, the lienholder must complete the designated lien section on MV213.
  4. Complete the odometer disclosure.
  5. You can either apply in person or send the completed application, along with a self-addressed envelope and a check for $25, to:
Division of Motor Vehicles
P.O. Box 698
Dover, DE 19903

Your duplicate title will arrive in the mail.

Title Transfer Documents

If you're selling a car and just received your duplicate title, this is what you'll need to do to complete the title transfer:

  1. Properly sign-off the car title, making sure all required sections are completed, including Section 1.
  2. Supply the DMV with either a Sellers' Report of Sale or a completed registration card
NOTE: A bill of sale is not required to transfer titles, but for peace of mind, you're welcome to complete one yourself and keep for your files.
