Lost Delaware License Plates and Car Tags

First, if you believe the license plate was stolen, report it to your local police department. This will protect you should someone attempt to use it for illegal purposes.

Next, visit your local DE DMV office with:

  • Proof of identity.
  • Proof of car insurance.
  • Your car title. If you have a lien, the DMV will provide you with a title request form to send to your lien holder.
  • Cash or a check, money order, or credit card (MasterCard, Visa) to pay a $6 fee for license plate and validation sticker.
If you submit an application for a specific license plate number, the DMV will provide you with a temporary license plate until your permanent one gets processed.

Keeping Up with Your Delaware Vehicle Registration

Be sure to renew your car registration in a timely manner. The DMV will notify you either by mail or automated e-mail or phone well before your current registration expires.

Renewing may require passing a safety inspection and smog check, so plan accordingly. If you do not renew before your vehicle registration expires, you will be assessed a $10 late fee.
