Ordering DE Vanity Plates and Personalized Plates
Before ordering a custom license plate, you'll first need to settle on a license plate number. When deciding, keep the following Delaware DMV restrictions in mind:- The DMV will reject any submission it deems as vulgar or offensive.
- You're restricted to a maximum of seven characters (five for motorcycles). You can select one letter, a combination of letters, or a mix of letters and numbers.
- If your license plate includes numbers, the numbers must be displayed to the right of all letters.
- The DMV will reject any custom plate submission that only includes numbers.
- Hyphens, ampersands (the only punctuation marks allowed), and spaces are admissible and will be counted as one character.
- The DMV reserves the right to reject any personalized plate that conflicts with an existing plate. Before submitting, you can check for availability using the DMV Vanity Plate Search tool. This can be found on the DMV website.
- Provide proper identification.
- Complete all paperwork.
- Pay the $40 vanity license plate fee with cash or a check, money order, or credit card (Visa, MasterCard). This fee is in addition to the regular registration fee.
