Vehicle Registration and Emissions Testing

Hawaii does not require an emissions or smog check for car registration. Smog is usually not a problem on the isles due to the strong trade winds that move the smog out onto the ocean.

However, you must have a safety inspection performed at an authorized service center. These are located all over the islands; look for a sign at your nearest gas station/oil change center/service center stating that they do inspections.

The inspection itself is very short, but you might want to make an appointment so you don’t have to wait.

Registration Renewal Inspection

You will have to have a new inspection every year before you renew the car registration.

Exception

The exception to this is if you just had your car shipped into the state within the previous year, and had it inspected upon the initial registration; sometimes the state waives the next inspection that would normally be due on renewal. If this is the case, the HI DMV informs you that you may skip the first renewal inspection.

Vehicle Registration Fees

Registration fees are calculated according to the car's weight and usage. The fee will appear on your register car renewal notice.
