How much does it cost to check the status of my driver’s license in New York? New York

New Driver Checklist

New York is rather unique in that residents can check the status of their license when renewing their driver's license by mail. Simply check the box at the bottom of the driver's license renewal form and enclose payment for the $10 records fee. You can also order your driver's license online with a credit card for the same price. To order by phone using a credit card, call (800) 225-5368 from area codes 315, 518, 585, 607, or 716 or call (518) 473-5595 from all other area codes. You'll be charged an extra $5 for this service, however.

When time is of the essence, you may wish to use a third-party provider to check the status of your driver's license. You'll cut the time required to receive this information from about two weeks to just a few days. You'll pay a bit extra for this service, but it can be well worth the expense to avoid the hassle of completing the paperwork yourself.

Regardless of whether you or a third-party handles the request, you can only view the driving record of another person if you have a specific recognized need for the information—such as needing to verify the status of a license before extending an offer for employment or approving a new auto insurance policy.
