It's the same process for either one; here's how to replace a damaged or lost title.

ID Duplicate Title Process

Begin by locating your car registration. You'll need that to record the vehicle identification number (VIN) and title number on the title application form. You can download the form from the DMV site.

Can't find the registration? Order a motor vehicle record request form for $7 through the DMV, which contains the missing information.

It's best to complete the form – or at least sign it – at a county assessor's office in front of a DMV employee. That saves you from getting the form notarized.

Keep in mind that only the car title owner or the lienholder can request a duplicate title. Complete instructions are located on the back of the duplicate title form.

When you've completed and signed the form and paid the $14 duplicate title fee, hand the form over to the DMV. Or, if you prefer, mail it to:

Ada County Processing Center
P.O. Box 140019
Garden City, ID 83714

Rush Title

Should you be in a hurry to receive your duplicate title, you can request a rush title. But, doing so costs another $26, bringing your total to $40.
