To order personalized plates or vanity plates - meaning custom license plates with your choice of numbers or letters - you can do so online, by fax, or by mail.

General ID Personalized Plate Details

No matter which order method you employ, you're allowed up to seven characters. Your combination of letters and/or numbers must be considered to be tasteful by the DMV, or else it faces rejection.

You can personalize standard plates, with an initial cost of $25 and annual renewal cost of $15. Certain specialty plates can be personalized, too, for $50-$60 initially and $20-$30 annually. See the DMV site for a complete list of plates available.

Order Online, by Mail, or by Fax

To fax or mail your request, download and complete the application form found on the DMV site. The mailing address and the fax number are provided on the form.

However, it may be easier to order through the DMV site. You can instantly see if your personalized combination is available and order it. But you will have to pay a minor processing fee, in addition to the custom license plate charges.

Ordering ID Standard or Specialty Plates

Idaho allows you to order a wide variety of plates with different backgrounds. Many can be ordered at a county assessor's office, while some have to be special ordered. Visit the DMV site for a complete look at the available plates, and the ordering options for each.

Any Questions?

With so many license plate options available, it can get confusing.

So, if you need more info about a custom plate or personalized plate, or maybe about specialty plates, contact the DMV car registration division at (208) 334-8649.
