Indiana Emissions Testing Requirements
With some exceptions, if you have a car that's registered in Lake or Porter County, it must undergo emissions testing.Where to Go?

How Often?
The testing must be completed every two years - and also before you register your car for the first time.
Odd-numbered model year cars get tested in odd-numbered years; even-numbered vehicles get tested in even-numbered years.
What to Bring?
Take along your current vehicle registration or the registration renewal card.
By the way, you can also renew your car registration at the exam station for a convenience fee, and skip the trip to the BMV.
How Much Does It Cost?
The testing is free.
What Happens if Your Car Fails?
You won't be able to complete the initial registration or the register car renewal.
However, you may qualify for a one-time waiver. This is for cars that keeping failing after you've tried to fix the smog or emissions problem. The waiver is valid for one test cycle, meaning your car will have to pass the smog check inspection at its next scheduled time (usually in two years).
What Cars are Exempt?
While this isn't a complete list, here are some common exemptions from the Indiana smog check program:
- Cars made before 1975
- Cars made within the past four years
- Electric cars
- Diesel-fueled vehicles
- Vehicles with a GVWR of more than 9,000 pounds
- Motorcycles
- Antique vehicles
