Obtaining a Duplicate Title in Indiana

Replacing a lost title or damaged title is a smart move, as your car title is an important document.

Fortunately, you have three ways to apply for duplicate titles: online, by mail, or at an Indiana BMV branch office.

Online

Go to the BMV site. If you haven't signed up for a myBMV account, do that. Then, follow the instructions provided to apply for your duplicate title.

By Mail

Complete the duplicate title/lost title form; it's self-explanatory. Then, mail it to the BMV with your $9 payment.

In Person

Head to a BMV branch office. Before going, complete the duplicate title/lost title form - you download it through the BMV site.

Bring acceptable personal identification (such as your drivers license) and something to identify the vehicle, such as its registration card or vehicle identification number (VIN). There's no need to produce a bill of sale. But, don't forget about the $9 fee.

Other IN Duplicate Title Notes

You can hasten this process by applying for a speed title, which reduces the processing time to less than 72 hours. However, doing so will cost you another $25.

If a lien exists on the title, the duplicate title will be sent to the lienholder.

Call the BMV at (888) myB-MV411 if you have questions regarding other title transfer or vehicle registration issues.
