According to the Iowa Department of Transportation (DOT), vehicles should be registered within 30 days of purchase. If you are a new state resident, you have 30 days from relocating to transfer your vehicle registration to Iowa. You must update your vehicle registration even if your license plates are still valid in your home state. For the purpose of car registration, college students and military personnel are not considered Iowa residents. To be a resident, you must meet one or more of the following criteria:

  • Accepted a permanent job in Iowa
  • Registered to vote in Iowa
  • Have children attending Iowa schools
  • Resided in Iowa for 30 continuous days

To complete a vehicle registration, you must visit your IA county treasurer's office with your current certificate of title and a completed registration application. The application must list all lien holders if you are using an auto loan to finance your vehicle.

Although some states require a safety inspection, emissions testing, or a smog check as a condition of car registration, Iowa has no such regulations. Proper vehicle maintenance is strongly encouraged, but mandatory inspections are not part of the process to register cars.

Vehicle Registration Costs

The amount of registration fees that are due for your vehicle will be based on your vehicle's weight and list price. Initial vehicle registration will cost more than vehicle registration renewal, however, due to the taxes on the purchase price. Contact your county treasurer's office if you have questions regarding your registration fees or acceptable payment methods.

Care of Your Registration

Once you receive your vehicle registration, you should affix the stickers to your license plate and keep the registration card in your vehicle. Vehicle registrations are valid for one year and expire on the last day of the month in which you were born. If your vehicle is registered to more than one person, you can choose which birth month you wish to have for registration renewal.
