The Department of Transportation (DOT) states that lost or damaged Iowa license plates and car tags must be replaced as soon as possible. Fortunately, this is not a difficult process.

Lost Car Tags

Please keep in mind that your car tags should be affixed to your license plate before the penalty date printed on your renewal reminder notice. If you renew your registration by mail or online, this means you should allow extra time for mailing and processing.

If you have damaged your license plate sticker or believe it was lost in the mail, you can request new car tags by visiting your IA county treasurer's office. There is no charge for this service, but you should bring your current vehicle registration if you have it available.

Lost License Plates

If you have lost one of your vehicle license plates, you can request a replacement by visiting your IA county treasurer's office. Bring a copy of your current car registration and the remaining license plate that is on your vehicle. There is a $5 fee for a replacement plate.

The process for replacing a lost license plate is the same regardless of whether or not you have a specialty license plate or a personalized plate. However, custom license plate designs may require additional replacement fees.
