In the state of Kentucky, you can obtain first time vehicle registration by submitting the following to your local Motor Vehicle Licensing (MVL) office:

  • Completed Application for Kentucky Title/Registration.
  • Notarized vehicle title, indicating you as the new owner.
  • Proof of liability insurance.
  • Proof of inspection, if your vehicle’s title was issued by another state.

You have 10 days to register your vehicle after relocating to the state of Kentucky. You have 15 days to register your vehicle after purchase from a dealer or private seller. When purchasing from a dealer, the dealership will assist you in completing new vehicle registration.

Emissions Testing

As of 2005, an emissions smog check is required only of vehicles new to Kentucky state. Smog inspections are administered by the County Sheriff’s office.

Register Car Fees
