The state of Kentucky does not require an emissions or smog check for registration renewal. Your vehicle is required to undergo a smog inspection only if it is has never been registered in Kentucky State.

Required Documents
After your vehicle has been inspected, you can complete your vehicle registration by submitting the following to the MVL division of your County Clerk’s office:
- Proof of inspection.
- Proof of liability insurance.
- A completed Application for Kentucky Title/Registration.
- Vehicle title, indicating you as the new owner, signed by a notary.
- Registration fee, in the form of a personal check or money order.
Register Car Fee
While the standard fee for car registration is $21, additional fees may apply, depending on the vehicle’s make and model, and the county you reside in. Contact your local MVL ahead of time for fee verification. The MVL website provides a complete list of County Clerk locations.
