If you have recently purchased a vehicle in the state of Louisiana, you have 40 days to obtain vehicle registration. If you are relocating to Louisiana, you have 30 days to register your vehicle.

Required Documents for Vehicle Registration

In order to obtain first-time car registration, submit the following required documents to your local Office of Motor Vehicles (OMV):

  • Notarized bill of sale for a new vehicle purchased.
  • Notarized title, indicating you as the vehicle owner.
  • Completed Vehicle Application.
  • Proof of vehicle insurance.
  • Completed odometer disclosure statement, for new vehicles purchased.
  • UCC-1 Financing Statement, mortgage agreement, or security agreement.
  • Proof of sales tax paid on the vehicle for out-of-state vehicles.
  • Current registration certificate for out-of-state vehicles.

Emissions Testing Requirements

After your vehicle is registered for the first time, the OMV will place it on a schedule for a yearly inspection and an emissions and smog check. Smog inspections are administered by a law enforcement officer, courtesy of the Transportation division of the LA Public Safety & Corrections department. The fee for an emissions test is $10.
