How to Apply for a ME Car Registration
- Go to your town clerk's office and pay the excise tax.
- Dealer purchases only: Bring the green dealer's certificate, blue title application (if the car is no more than 15 years old), acceptable proof of insurance, and white and yellow copy of the registration application.
- Private sale purchases only: Bring the bill of sale, properly assigned title (if the car is no more than 15 years old), acceptable proof of insurance, and white and yellow copy of the registration application.
- Pay the applicable registration fees.
- Pay the $33 title fee (private sale purchases only).
- Pay the 5% Maine sales tax (private sale purchases only).
