The Maine BMV offers two registration renewal options: online and in person at a town clerk's or BMV office.

Renew ME Car Registration Online

Only those who live in certain parts of Maine can use this option; see the Rapid Renewal page for more information.

If you're eligible to use this method, have your current registration, insurance card, and your car's mileage figure handy. Then follow the instructions provided on the site to start and complete the renewal process. You may pay your renewal fee by credit card or an electronic check, depending upon what your municipality accepts as a form of payment.

Expect to receive your registration and stickers within seven business days.

Renew ME Vehicle Registration In Person

Bring the yellow and white registration copies with you to the town clerk's office or the BMV, along with your insurance card and payment for the fees due, including the excise tax and renewal fee.

If your town can't process your registration, pay your excise tax while at the town office, then finish the renewal at the BMV.

ME Smog Check/Emissions Testing and Safety Exam

All vehicles must pass an annual safety inspection before the registration renewal period, while vehicles registered in Cumberland County must also pass a yearly emissions or smog test.

Failing to pass these tests could mean a suspended vehicle registration.
