No, not for a typical vehicle registration.

However, Maine does require all vehicles to undergo a safety inspection annually. And, cars registered in Cumberland County must pass an emissions testing program (sometimes referred to as a "smog check") each year.

But, these inspections are tied with a registration renewal, not a first-time car registration.

The Inspection: Where to Go and What to Expect

Safety inspections can be completed at a number of authorized repair shops throughout the state. While inspection fees vary, most cars should be able to complete the safety test for a fee of $12.50 or less.

After passing the inspection, the technician will place a sticker on your car's windshield indicating that your car passed. Your car will need to pass the inspection by the end of the same month next year to keep its registration valid.

What If Your Car Fails the Inspection?

Whether your vehicle flunks the smog and emissions or safety tests, repairs must be made to bring the car into compliance with state standards.

You'll have 60 days to make those repairs and bring the vehicle to an inspection station for another test. But, you can't drive a vehicle that's flunked the safety test until repairs have been completed.

Vehicles that continue to fail either test face getting their registrations suspended.
