Is your car registered in Cumberland County?

If not, you don't need to worry about an emissions test. But, if it is, here's what you need to know.

ME Smog Check/Emissions Testing

Every year, your gasoline-powered vehicle must pass a smog check. The testing can be completed at the same repair stations that conduct safety inspections, which also are required annually.

Under the terms of the Enhanced Auto Inspection Program, your car must pass its emissions inspection in order to qualify for a vehicle registration renewal. If your car fails the test, you'll have 60 days to make the repairs and bring it back to the station for another test. Most repair stations should have the capability of diagnosing and repairing the source of the emissions problems.

Should you car continue to fail – even after you've made the repairs – your car registration could be suspended.

Test fees vary, but most cars should be able to have the test completed for $12.50 or less.

Need more info on the smog test? Contact the Maine Department of Environmental Protection at (207) 287-2437.
