It's important to always have a legible copy of your Maine car title secured in a safe spot. So, if you notice the title is damaged or missing, you should take steps to replace it immediately.

Here's how to do so.

Applying for a ME Duplicate Title

Start by downloading and completing the duplicate title application. Make sure everyone who needs to sign the form does so (see the instructions provided on the application).

If a lien was listed on the title and it's been paid off, you should also complete a lien release form. The lienholder must complete and sign the lower portion of the form.

Then, take the necessary documents to a BMV branch, or mail them to:

Title Examination & Information Unit
29 State House Station
101 Hospital St.
Augusta, ME 04333-0029

Also include your payment for the $33 fee ($43 if you want a rush title). If your current title was damaged or illegible, you should bring it to the BMV office, or mail it along with your application and payment. You don't need to provide the bill of sale.

Vehicles that are older than 15 years don't require a title.

Have More Title Transfer Questions?

If you have other questions about titles (including a damaged or lost title), or perhaps vehicle registration matters, contact the BMV at (207) 624-9000.
