Register Car in MD

The MVA requires a safety inspection for all used cars being registered in Maryland. Only inspections at licensed inspection centers will be accepted.

Close to 1,600 inspection centers are conveniently located throughout the state and include car dealerships and auto repair shops. Always double check that the inspection station you're eyeing is state-licensed.

Once you settle on a station, call ahead and make an appointment. If you can't drive to the inspection site because you lack vehicle registration, contact the MVA about obtaining a 30-day temporary permit. This will allow you to legally drive to the inspection site.

The test will take anywhere from 60 to 90 minutes. Your vehicle will only be inspected for safety. If you pass, the test site mechanic will hand you two copies of an Inspection Certificate, one green and one gold. You'll submit the green copy when applying for car registration (along with other required documents and registration fees), and keep the gold copy for your own records.

If you fail, you cannot apply for car registration. You'll need to have your vehicle repaired and then retested.

Inspection fees vary with inspection site.

Emissions Testing for Smog

Proof of passing a smog check is not required for initial registration. You will eventually, however, be required to pass an emissions test if you reside in one of the following counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's and Washington.
