Register Car in MD and Emissions Inspection

After you obtain a Maryland car registration certificate, the MVA will send you a Vehicle Emissions Inspection Program (VEIP) notice if your vehicle is registered in one of the following counties: Anne Arundel, Baltimore, Calvert, Carroll, Cecil, Charles, Frederick, Harford, Howard, Montgomery, Prince George's, Queen Anne's and Washington. You'll then have eight weeks to take your vehicle to a smog check facility and be tested for smog emissions.

When you arrive for your test, have either your inspection notice or vehicle registration certificate, and cash, check or credit card (Visa, MasterCard, MasterCard) to pay the $14 smog check fee. Your vehicle will then be checked for excessive smoke, leaking fluids, dashboard warning lights and any signs of tampering with the exhaust system.

At the end of the test, an inspection site technician will present you with a vehicle emissions certificate, indicating if your vehicle passed or failed. If it failed, you'll be instructed about repairs and re-testing.

An emissions certificate is valid for two years.

NOTE: If you need an extension for your inspection due date, call the VEIP at (800) 638-8347. Otherwise, you'll charged a $15 late fee, and every four weeks thereafter. If you continue to ignore having your vehicle tested, the MVA will suspend your vehicle registration.
