Lost Maryland Car Titles

If you cannot locate your car title, you'll need to order a replacement. Even if you don't need it right now or even next year, you'll eventually need a duplicate title for when it comes time to complete a title transfer.

Order a MD Lost Title

You can order a duplicate title via an online form found on the MVA's website. To complete the form, you'll need:

  • The vehicle title number.
  • The license plate number.
  • A check or a valid credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express) to pay the $20 lost title fee. Money orders and travelers checks not accepted.
The MVA will mail your car title in about 10 days. Make sure, before ordering, that the MVA has your current mailing address on record.

Keep in mind that the duplicate title will void all previous titles.

Title Transfer Documents

If you're in the midst of a title transfer, you will need, in addition to the properly assigned car title, the following other documents to give to the buyer:

  • A notarized bill of sale if the vehicle is seven years old or newer, and is being sold for less than the book value.
  • A Notice of Security Interest Filing, if applicable.

After handing over the title, don't forget to remove your license plates. You can then either transfer them to another vehicle under your name, or surrender them to the MVA. If you elect to turn in the plates, be sure to hand them in and cancel your registration BEFORE canceling insurance coverage.
