How do I obtain a salvage title in Maryland? Maryland
Used Cars and Titles
Requirements for obtaining a salvage title depend on one of two situations: whether you purchased an abandoned vehicle at a police auction, or whether you own a damaged vehicle and have decided to keep it.Maryland Salvage Title for Vehicle Bought at Auction
You'll need to provide the MVA with:- An Auctioneer's Sales Receipt for Police Sales of Abandoned Vehicles Only, provided to you by the police. This will serve as your proof of ownership. This form, which must be notarized, must include the car's mileage and the signatures of a police department representative, a governmental sub-division representative, and the auctioneer.
- Proof of identity.
- Payment for the $20 Maryland Certificate of Salvage fee.
NOTE: No bill of sale is required.
MD Salvage Title for Damaged Vehicle
Your insurance company will notify the MVA if it allows you to keep your damaged vehicle. You'll then need to provide the MVA with the following documents:- A completed Application for a Salvage Certificate. Be sure to include your reason behind retaining the vehicle.
- The vehicle's title.
- A lien release, if applicable.
- Proof of passing a Maryland safety inspection. The vehicle must pass the inspection within 90 days of being notified by the MVA or the registration will be suspended.
- Payment for the $20 Maryland Certificate of Salvage fee.
Keep in mind that when the damage is 75% of the car's fair market value and repairable, greater than 75% cosmetic damage or has sustained flood damage, the MVA will brand your new title as one of the following: "rebuilt salvage," "flood damage" or "sustained cosmetic damage".
With the certificate you can then do as you wish with the vehicle, including selling it for parts or try to upgrade it to rebuilt auto status.
