There aren't any smog check or emissions testing programs in Michigan.

At least, not any more. For a while, there were testing programs in some of the more heavily polluted areas of the state. But, that ended quite a while ago.

So, you don't have to worry about your vehicle passing a smog or emissions exam before applying for your car registration or renewing its registration.

MI Vehicle Registration Renewals

Of course, you still must renew your car's registration on time. Failing to do so could mean a traffic ticket for driving with an expired registration - and a hefty fine. Plus, there's a $10 late registration fee that will be tacked on to your renewal fee.

The SOS gives you five ways to renew your registration: online, in person, by mail, by phone, and through self-service terminals.
