It's not as difficult as you might think; just follow these steps.

Replacing a MI Damaged or Lost Title

Go to a Secretary of State (SOS) branch office, and complete a duplicate title application. Everyone listed on the title must not only sign the title at the office, but also must show proper identification (such as a driver's license). You don't need to provide a bill of sale or anything proving the sales price of the vehicle.

Should it be impossible for a listed owner to appear, that person can instead fill out and sign an Appointment of Agent form. Doing so allows the designated individual to sign the application at the SOS instead of the listed owner.

A duplicate title costs $15. Need the title the same day? You can do so for only an additional $5 at select SOS offices. Otherwise, you'll get your replacement car title with seven-to-10 days by mail.

Important Title Note

The SOS cautions that - in some situations - more steps or paperwork may be needed to complete this process, and encourages you to call (888) SOS-MICH or (888) 767-6424 before heading to the office. You can also call that number for questions about applying for a title transfer or vehicle registration in Michigan.
