Register Car in MN With the DVS

The DVS requires that you apply for car registration within 10 days of purchasing or obtaining a new vehicle. The process is easy. You can apply in person at any DVS office, or by submitting your vehicle registration application by mail.

How to Apply for Minnesota Vehicle Registration

Visit any DVS office with:
  • A completed Application to Title/Register a Vehicle. This can be downloaded from the DVS's website.
  • Proof of identity.
  • The vehicle's title.
  • Payment for car registration. Check with your local DVS office for help in pinpointing an exact fee, which may, depending on your situation, include a registration tax, a wheelage tax and sales tax.

If you opt to apply by mail, send documents and payment to:

    Minnesota Department of Public Safety
    Driver and Vehicle Services Division
    445 Minnesota St.
    St. Paul, MN 55101-5160

Relocating to Minnesota

After moving to MN and establishing residency you have 60 days to register your vehicle with the DVS.

MN Emissions Testing for Smog

Unlike many other states, Minnesota does not require proof of passing a safety inspection and/or a smog check prior to registering. State officials terminated emissions inspections in 1999.
