Depending on the weight of your auto, you will have to visit one of two places to complete your car registration for the first time in Mississippi (MS). If your car or truck weighs fewer than 10,001 pounds, contact your county tax collector’s office to submit your register car paperwork.

You will also visit this office if your motor vehicle weighs more than 10,000 pounds and you do not drive the vehicle outside of MS. If your car or truck weighs more than 10,000 pounds and you operate the vehicle within and outside MS state lines, visit the Tax Commission office in Clinton, MS to complete the vehicle registration.

Registering a Motor Vehicle for the First Time in Mississippi

Bring the following documents with you to the tax office:

  • Valid MS drivers license.
  • Motor vehicle odometer reading.
  • Social Security number.
  • Document to prove you are a MS resident (i.e. recent bank statement, paycheck stub).
  • Vehicle identification number (VIN).
  • Lienholder name and address (if the auto is financed).
  • Motor vehicle title (include the bill of sale if the vehicle is newly purchased).
Pay the $14 motor vehicle registration fee. Make your check or money order out to the Mississippi Department of Revenue.

A smog check or emissions testing are not required to register your auto. Although the inspection is not required, regular tune-ups will keep dangerous emissions and smog from building up in your auto and polluting the air.

When to Register New Autos

The MS Department of Revenue (DOR) gives you up to nine days to register a newly purchased vehicle in the state before they assess you late registration fines and penalties.

If you move to MS, register your auto within 30 days of relocating to the state. Failure to do so could cause you to receive a $250 late registration penalty.

Military personnel and their dependents and students who do not officially reside in MS are not required to register their motor vehicles in the DOR.
